high style pleases knees

Good news for glamor pusses:high heels may actually be good for your knees. More than two percent of people aged over 55 suffer pain as a result of knee osteoarthritis. But researchers at Oxford Brookes University in England wondered why twice as many women as men over 65 were affected. They suspected high heels might be to blame. However, a survey of 111 women found those who ha regularly worn 7.5cm hells were more likely to have healthy knees- particularly if they'd danced in hells. Being overweight before 40, heavy smoking and previous knee injury were far more likely to increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis.

meditation

Think meditation requires years of training in a monastery? well think again. At its simplest, it's about focusing the mind on physical sensations "in the moment". start with ten minutes a day:

  1. wearing loose clothing, find somewhere quiet and sit comfortably. The classic posture is to sot cross- legged on a cushion that tilts your pelvis forward.
  2. concentrate on your breath, without forcing it. When you breathe in, be aware of breathing in. When you breathe out, be aware of that.
  3. become aware of your toes, then your feet, then your calves and so on. Work through the whole of your body.
The focus requires quite lot of discipline, but in time your mind should become calmer and your happiness will be less dependent on the ebb and flow of external circumctances.

NIBBLING AT NIGHT COULD BE AN ILLNESS

Do you wake up at night and raid the fridge? It could be more than peckishness. "Night- eating syndrome" is a stress- related eating disorder first noted by DR Albert Stunkard. Sufferers typically wake with little appetite for breakfast and don't start eating until afternoon but by the evening are overeating. Then, they have trouble getting to sleep and wake once or more during the night for a snack. It occurs mostly, but not exclusively in overweight people and can itself lead to obesity. Recent studies estimate that 2.5 per cent of people are binge eaters.

A WATCH FOR ALL OCCASIONS

If you are looking for a woman's watch that will work for casual or dressy events, try something small with a simple face- this style is more feminine than a sporty watch.

A gold and silver bracelet combo can be worn with any kind of jewelery. If you're not a metal fan, opt for a skinny black leather band. If you do choose a watch with a bracelet band, shake it gently before purchase- less rattle means better quality. Whatever you pick, buy it from an authorized.

Don't forget, good watchers need maintenance. So take yours in every two years to have it cleaned and oiled, or to replace the battery.

STOP BEFORE YOU POP

Many of us take supplements, but we’re not always doing it right. According to a US study, people with high cholesterol, for example, were much likely to take vitamin E than those without the disease. Yet this nutrient hasn’t been proved to reduce cholesterol ; it may even interfere with other treatment.

On the other hand, women how suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis aren’t any more likely to take calcium supplements than healthy women, even though much research shows calcium helps.

Vitamin information seems to change weekly, so talk to your doctor before taking supplements.

what is hotter, a white, blue, or red flame?

If the element on your stove had no limit, it would theoretically pass from the original black(emitting no heat) to red (925), orange, yellow and then to white(1200) and finally bluish white (2000).

The hotter the temperature, the more the colours shift from red to yellow to white to blue.

Blue is so hot it is at the very edge of the visible spectrum. Beyond blue are ultraviolet rays, which can cause burns and even skin cancer

IS MOTION SICKNESS CONNECTED TO THE EARS?

Motion sickness has a great deal to do with the sense of balance, which is controlled in part by the inner ear. When sitting in a moving car, boat, or aeroplane, for example, the fluid io the inner ear shifts, and confusing impulses may be sent to the balance center of the brain. The eyes, as well unable to focus on a fixed horizon, may send upsetting messages to the brain. Some of these impulses may eventually reach the area that controls nausea and vomiting, with consequences that are all too famliar. The good news is there are drugs that can be taken before a trip to help prevent or reduce motion sickness.

HEALTHIER WAY TO BBQ

Cooking meat over an open flame creates chemicals long suspected of increasing cancer risk. According to the new studies, eating barbecued red meat may raise the risk of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in post menopausal women.

Take these tips to heart:

# Scrape off any charred portions, which contain many of the chemicals believed to lead to cancer

# keeps the temperature lower to lessen the smoke and flames that reach the food and raise the barbecue racks

# choose skinless chicken and fish. They don’t appear to raise cancer risk
